Washington D.C. presents some of America's most challenging driving conditions—confusing L'Enfant street grid, heavy traffic, aggressive drivers, numerous traffic circles, and the highest concentration of diplomatic vehicles in the country. The national monuments and federal buildings add unique routing challenges.

D.C. driving schools emphasize navigation skills for the unique layout, traffic circle proficiency, awareness of motorcade and security closures, and the patience required for daily D.C. traffic. Many students also need preparation for the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

The D.C. DMV handles local licensing, but many area residents have Virginia or Maryland licenses. D.C. driving is not for the faint of heart—professional instruction is highly recommended.
